“The unhomelessness — that is the condition of extra-territorial and cross-cultural initiations. To be unhomed is not to be homeless, nor can the ‘unhomely’ be easily accommodated in that familiar division of social life into private and public spheres. In that displacement, the borders between home and world become confused.”

Homi Bhabha

I was born in a Turkmen-Georgian family right before the Soviet Union collapsed. My family and I stayed in Turkmenistan. Growing up in a country during its transition and establishment of its own identity led to my journey of discovering who I am: born in a country that does not exist anymore, speaking only a language that is no longer the language of the majority, growing more and more apart from the country I lived in, and longing for the country I never belonged and were not able to visit for twenty years — Georgia.

“Unhomed” is a story of returning to my roots and acceptance of the complexity of my identity and a journey to embrace it.

The project consists of several subprojects that I started working since 2020 and onwards.

Work in progress.
